UNILAG Commissions Marine Police Post, Boosts Security At Varsity’s Waterfront

Determined to boost security in and around the institution, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Tuesday commissioned the Marine Police Post located at the university’s waterfront.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday, Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for the project, and acknowledged the support of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund) for the project.

Prof. Ogundipe said that the Police Marine Post, which “was funded by the Tetfund grants that we got, will definitely improve our security network in connection to UNILAG and the neighbourhood. It is not only here.”

“I know that the Police have their gunboat around Iwaya, Makoko and Oworonshoki. This will complement the security network around this place as well as on the Third Mainland Bridge.”

While commending the cordial working relationship between UNILAG and the Police, the VC said, “It has been a very cordial one. They have been very supportive. Anytime we call on them, they act promptly to support us. So, we acknowledge them for their support. I believe that we will continue to work together for the betterment of the country.”

Commenting on the parameter fence in UNILAG which caved in recently, the VC noted that the institution is yet to write officially to the Federal Government.

He commended the Marine Police, adding that the “government is doing something good in terms of security, which we need to support and this is one of them.”

“This is to let the Marine Police know that there is a need to assist us in this area, as the marine area is vulnerable to all forms of attacks,” Prof. Ogundipe said.

Also at the event, the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Area ‘C’ Surulere, Tijani Fatai, who represented the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said that the Marine Police Post, which was built by the management of UNILAG, will improve security in the waterways.

Fatai said that as determined as the Lagos State CP is, to ensure peace and tranquility within Lagos and the environs, the marine or coastal areas are not left out.

He noted that CP’s determination is to ensure that there is security in all parts of Lagos State, adding, “That has been the motive of the CP, which he has been working on till this moment.”

On the collaboration between the Police and UNILAG to enhance security on the campus, Fatai said, “We’ve always had a very robust relationship and synergy with the management of UNILAG. The VC has been very supportive when it comes to security and he knows our commitment to security within the area.”
