The University of Lagos introduces a revamped hostel balloting system to ensure fairness, accessibility, and transparency in bed space allocation for students.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has unveiled a new, transparent hostel balloting system aimed at addressing long-standing challenges in bed space allocation.

Designed to ensure fairness, accessibility, and inclusivity, the system introduces a random selection process and prioritizes students with special needs, fostering equity in the allocation of limited hostel spaces.

UNILAG Introduces New Hostel Balloting System

The Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Musa Obalola, has announced a new random selection balloting system for hostel bed space allocation.

Speaking to UNILAG Sun, the Dean explained that the system aims to ensure fairness and accessibility, particularly for students with the greatest needs. Applications will be open for one to two weeks, after which allocations will be determined through random selection, eliminating reliance on faster networks.

With over 30,000 students vying for 10,000 bed spaces, 70% will be allocated through general balloting, while the remaining 30% will cater to special cases, including students with disabilities, health challenges verified by the medical center, scholars, and athletes,” he stated.

Professor Obalola also warned against paying individuals claiming to secure bed spaces, emphasizing that the process will be strictly transparent and randomized.
