Apply For Fulbright Foreign Student Program 2024/2025
8th December, 2023 Scholarships
The Public Affairs Section of U.S. Mission Nigeria is pleased to announce the annual call for applications for the Fulbright Foreign Student Program for the 2024/2025 academic year. The Fulbright Foreign Student Program is a research program funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York.

The Fulbright Foreign Student Program aims to enhance the capabilities of African universities by providing advanced degree training and fostering the growth of academic staff. Geared towards young and highly promising faculty members, it offers an opportunity to pursue doctoral research in the United States. Eligible applicants must have completed at least two years of their doctoral program in any discipline at a Nigerian university or research institute at the time of application.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program Value

The grant encompasses the grantee's round-trip airfare to the U.S., a settling-in allowance, monthly stipend, housing allowance, books-and-supplies allowance, and a computer allowance. Additionally, it includes basic university health insurance as the primary coverage and the Fulbright ASPE health benefit as secondary coverage.
NB:
The grant does not cover travel of dependents, hence grantees will not be allowed to travel with spouse and children to the United States.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program Eligibility

To qualify for a grant;
  • Applicants must be citizens or nationals of Nigeria, or permanent residents with a valid passport issued by the government of Nigeria.
  • Eligible candidates are doctoral or PhD students who have completed a substantial portion of their doctoral program in Nigerian universities and have the endorsement of their home institution.

Note: Master's and first-degree applicants are not eligible for this program.
  • Applicants should possess an outstanding academic record and a high level of English proficiency.
  • Applicants must take their first TOEFL exam by May 2023 and achieve a minimum score on required standardized tests (TOEFL: a score of 90).
  • High motivation and a serious commitment to completing the program as scheduled and returning home are essential.Only applicants with robust proposals, delineating research objectives, methodology, time-frame, and justification for conducting research in the U.S., will be short-listed for interviews.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who have not previously studied in the U.S.
  • Individuals in business, law, and accounting should be aware that most U.S. institutions seldom accept research students in these fields due to high demand for full-time programs and tuition concerns. Thus, finding placements for such grantees poses challenges unless their proposals are focused on economics, development-related areas, democracy, human rights, and conflict resolution.

Fulbright Foreign Student Program Field of Study

The competition welcomes applicants from the following fields: Science, engineering, technology, arts, journalism, public relations, media studies, agriculture, food science, economics, environmental science, international relations, political science, public administration, policy, public health, and tourism.
Please be aware that the Fulbright Foreign Student Program is highly competitive, particularly in journalism, communication, and business administration, as well as in the sciences, including chemistry, biology, physics, and related engineering disciplines.
