Epilepsy is a condition in which the patient is subject to recurrent attacks of loss of consciousness. Known as 'fits' on-losing consciousness, the patient falls and may hurt himself, and though in some cases the fit may end at this point, mest attack go on to a stage in which the muscle on the body became rigid and the breathing is interrupted. This in turn is usually followed by the convulsive stage, in which there are jerking movements of the head, limbs and hanD. The tongue may be bitten and he patient's writhing, irregular breathing, starring eyes and blue lips may be very alarming to the spectator. Then the patient slowly recovers, though when consciousness is fully restored the patient is still in a weakened condition and suffers unpleasant after-effects. Onlookers often insist on calling an ambulance but this is unnecessary. The patient should be made as comfortable as possible and allowed to rest.
