The Mahdiyya Movement began with the declaration of the Mahdi in the year 1885. The Mahdiyya Movement was an Islamic revolt against the Egyptian military occupation of Sudan. It was led by Muhammad Ahmad bin Abd Allah, who declared himself the Mahdi, the prophesied redeemer of the Islamic faith, in 1881, but it wasn't until 1885 that the movement gained significant traction.
