The policy of indirect rule was used by the British during the colonial period through which they governed the people of the colonies indirectly through their traditional political institutions and rulers. The indirect rule policy was first used in northern protectorate in 1900 by Lord Lugard when he was the High commissioner for the northern protectorate.
