(i)They took part in the colonial government policy of Indirect Rule.

(iii) They helped to preserve the culture and customs of their communities that were approved by the British.
(iv) They acted as a link between the colonial masters and their people.
(v) They organized communal work on behalf of the British.
(vi) They took part in law making, as some of them were members of the Legislative Councils and later Houses of Chiefs.
(vii) They helped to settle disputes arising from customs and tradition of the people.
(viii) They helped in tax assessment and collection for the colonial government.
(ix) They helped to conscript youths to perform forced labour and serve in the British Army during the World Wars.
(x) They presided over native courts established by the British.
