Why will the one-party system not be a good option for Nigeria?
Explanation
The following points will make one party system not a good option for Nigeria: (i) It can produce dictatorship: Leadership in a one-party state tends to become dictatorial. There is no opposition and no checks and balances in the system. (ii) Abuse of Human Rights: Respect for human rights is in dispute in a one-party state. Civil and political rights are denied the people. (iii) It is not democratic: One-party system works against the principles of democracy. (iv) Inadequate political education: The extent of political education given in a one-party state is inadequate compared to a multi-party state where much political education is given to the people. (v) The government can perpetuate itself in power: A one-party state may not have the provision for periodic elections or change of government. This can result in the government perpetuating itself in power. (vi) Absence of the independence of the judiciary: The independence of the judiciary is not respected and the executive arm of government interfere with its functions. (vii) No press freedom: Censorship of the press cannot be ruled out in a one-party state. There is the tendency for the government to control the press. (viii) No respect for the principles of the rule of law: The belief in the supremacy of law is out of place in a one-party state. The government is not ready to respect the provisions of the constitution. (ix) Opinions of the people are not respected: Opinions of the people which the government is supposed to use in formulation of policies are not respected. The government may see some of the opinions expressed as dissenting and those who express such opinions might be dealt with. (x) May result in Military intervention: Bad administration coupled with the rulers' refusal to leave office can bring about a military coup.
