Under General Aguiyi Ironsi, Decree 34 introduced the unitary system of government in Nigeria. This decree abolished the federal structure of the country and replaced it with a unitary system. A unitary system of government is a form of government where the central government is supreme, and the administrative divisions exercise only powers that the central government chooses to delegate.
