(a) Four functions of towns include:
(i) Industrial function
(ii) Commercial function
(iii) Administrative function
(iv) Residential function
(b) Four ways the initial function of a town contribute to its growth:
(i) As a result of the siting of many industries in a town due to large market, easy transportation, availability of power; people tend to migrate to the town to take up employment in the industries
(ii) Also, as a result of commercial activities in the town, people tend to settle in the town resulting in the growth of that town.
(iii) Due to the fact that the seat of government is located there, people tend to move closer to the government resulting in the growth of the town
(iv) The availability of social amenities such as pipe-borne water, electricity, etc, people tend to move into the town to enjoy these amenities resulting in its growth.
(c) Three ways in which rural settlements are dependent on urban settlements include:
(i) Urban settlements are usually the sources of manufactured goods for the rural settlements.
(ii) Urban settlements may also serve as administrative headquarters of the rural settlements
(iii) It is also a source of employment to rural settlements
