Write explanatory notes on any three of the following: (a) Government's influence on the location of industries in Tropical Africa (b) Nearness to market as a factor of industrial location in Tropical Africa (c) The concentration of manufacturing industries n urban centres of developing countries (d) The predominance of consumer oriented industries in developing countries
Explanation
(a) Government influences on the location of industries in tropical Africa. Government can directly or indirectly influence the location of industries. Such government influence may be owing to political, social, economic or military reasons. Government influences the location indirectly by offering incentives such as tax reliefs or low land rent, provision of basic amenities for the establishment of industries in an area. (b) Nearness to market as a factor of industries location in Tropical Africa. Market is one of the factors affecting the location of industries. Industry will not be located where there is no market. Industries are located in areas of high population density because of the high purchasing power of the urban dwellers. Cost of transportation of manufactured goods is also reduced, and those industries whose finished products are bulkier than the raw materials are usually located at or near the market, e.g soft drinks and beer industries whose products are not only bulky but also breakable are located on or near the market. (c) Concentration of manufacturing industries in urban centres of developing countries is due to (i) Proximity to power, e.g electricity is easily available in urban areas (ii) Supply of labour - due to high population in urban area, cheap labour can easily be available for the industries to use (iii) Reduction in cost of transportation. Since there are good road network coupled with numerous vehicles, cost of transportation of both raw material and finished goods is reduced (iv) Favourable market. Urban areas serve as good market for the location of industries because of high purchasing power of the urban dwellers (iv) Easy source of capital: Most urban areas provide the means, i.e banks where entrepreneurs can easily get loan to boost their production
