Explanation
(a) Important fishing areas and fishing ports in South Africa. Fishing is done in two ways (i) Inland fishing- not very popular and it is only done in Rivers Orange and Great Fish River (ii) Offshore fishing - Done along the entire coast of South Africa and also in deep seas i.e Atlantic and Indian oceans. Some of the fishing ports are port Elizabeth, Durban, East London. (b) Methods of fishing. On a large scale the method of fishing involves-the use of trawlers especially in the oceans (c) Major type of fish caught. These include mackerel, herring, salmon, had etc. (d) Preparation and marketing of fish. Fish caught are cleaned, refrigerated in cold stores and can be exp as raw fish. It can also be processed into usable canfish e.g sardines which are later consumed locally or exported (e) Fishing is very important for the following reasons: (i) It provides rich source of protein for the people (ii) Its exportation provides foreign exchange earning for the country (iii) It also provides jobs for many people (iv) It has resulted in the establishment of fish processing industries.
