(a) Discuss the problems of transportation on the (i) Niger-Benue waterway (ii) Lagos-Kano railway line (b) Suggest possible solutions to these problems
Explanation
(a) Problems of transportation on: (i) Niger- Benue waterway include: (1) Change in the volume of water with season. There is increase in volume of water during the rainy season which favours easy navigation but it is a problem during the dry season. (2) Presence of rapids and cataracts - These are obstacles which inhibit easy transportation in the rivers (3) Presence of debris. Niger-Benue waterway are at times filled with debris of forest leaves, broken branches of trees. These debris inhibit easy navigation in Niger-Benue waterway (ii) The problems of transportation on Lagos-Kano railway line include: (1) Long distance between the place involved. The distance between Lagos -Kano is too long and boring (2) Problems with the rail tracks. Most of the rail tracks (Gauges) are worn out and outdated (3) Presence of only one lane. Despite the importance of the route, it has only one lane as this poses a problem of allowing one train to wait till the other has passed Solution: As for the Niger-Benue waterway effort should be made to remove these cateracts and rapids in some areas so that navigation will be smooth. Solution: As for the Lagos-Kano railway line effort should be made to construct another lane so that one train doesn't wait for the other to pass.
