Explanation
Luke 10:25-37 (a)
(i) A lawyer came to test Jesus, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?.
(ii) Jesus asked him "What is written in the law? How do you read?
(iii) The lawyer replied that you should love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.
(iv) Jesus commended and asked him to go and do as he had answered and he would live.
(v) In an attitude of self-justification, the lawyer asked Him who his neighbour was.
(vi) Jesus answered with the story of a man travelling from Jerusalem to Jericho.
(vii) He was attacked and robbed by armed-robbers, leaving him half-dead.
(viii) A priest came by and saw him but instead of helping him look another side and left.
(ix) Also, a Levite saw him and passed by without helping him.
(x) But a Samaritan who saw him, had compassion on him and gave him first aid treatment.
(xi) He got him admitted in a nearby hospital at his own expense.
(xii) This man urged the hospital to take care of him promising to balance the bill on his way back.
(xiii) The lawyer admitted that the Samaritan who showed compassion to the robbery victim was his true neighbour.
(xiv) Jesus asked him to go and do likewise.
(b) Concern for others:
(i) the man's love and concern for his neighbour was practical.
(ii) We should be ready to render assistance to whosoever is in danger without prejudice.
(iii) The attitude of the priest and Levi is unchristian, and must be corrected.
(iv) We should be ready to help/assist others (e.g. the needy, orphans, etc) without counting the cost.
(v) Assistance must be total and be followed up.
