(a) With specific reference to St. Mathew's Gospel, narrate the story of the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ.
Explanation
(a) After six days, Jesus took with him Peter, James and John and led them up a high mountain where they were alone. He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and his garments became white as light There appeared to them Moses and Elijah, who spoke with Jesus. Peter said: " Lord it is well that we are here, if you wish, I will make three booths, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah". While he was speaking, a bright cloud over-shadowed them and a voice from the cloud said, " this is my beloved son with whom I am well pleased; listen to him". When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces, and were filled with awe. Jesus came and touched them, saying: "Rise, and have no fear". When they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.
(b) The significances of transfiguration of Christ to Christians include:
(i) The appearance of Moses and Elijah signified that Jesus came to fulfill the law and the prophets and not to cancel it.
(ii) It confirms Jesus as the true son of God.
(iii) The disappearance of Moses and Elijah signify that the law and the prophet had come to pass or had been replaced by a new fulfilled one in Jesus Christ who is the messiah.
(iv) The disciples of Jesus became stronger in the faith that Jesus was truly the son of God.
