Explanation
Terminal alkynes (such as ethyne but \(-1-\) yne, pent - 1 - yne) when passed through ammoniacal solutions of copper(I) chloride and silver trioxonitrate (V) at room temperature, precipitate copper acetylides (reddish - brown) and silver acetylide (whitish - yellow)respectively e.g.
\(CH _{3}- C = C - H _{(2)}+ CuCl _{(\text {sa) }} \rightarrow \overrightarrow{ CH }- C - Cu\)
Reddish brown
\(H - C = C - H +2 AgNO _{3} \rightarrow Ag - C = C - Ag\)
Whitish yellow
\(H - C = C - H +2 CuCl \rightarrow Cu - C = C - Cu\) \(CH _{3}- C = C - H + AgNO _{3} \rightarrow CH _{3}- C = C - Ag\) \(CH _{3}- C = C - CH _{3}+ AgNO _{3}\) (or \(\left.CUCl _{2}\right)\)
Non-terminal No reaction
