Denitrifying bacteria/certain fungi in the soil Convert nitrates into nitrites Some bacteria/pseudomonas spp can convert ammonia/nitrite/nitrate into gaseous nitrogen, which is released into the atmosphere, leading to reduction of soil nitrogen content, resulting in reduced soil fertility
